OPRAH ZEROS & COMMAS

Oprah Zeros & Commas originates with the complete deconstruction of O, The Oprah Magazine into conceptual archives. Hand-torn fragments, cut imagery, and intact pages are reassembled into layered compositions before being veiled with translucent paint that simultaneously conceals and reveals the printed surface. Rendered in iridescent paint, the Zeros suspend a familiar corporate identity between abstraction and material memory. Prompted by my decision to leave my career in 2000, the series comprises nine monumental Zeros, three Commas, and several smaller studies. Oprah Zeros & Commas reconfigures a familiar cultural artifact into materially layered paintings that foreground the accumulation of images, the construction of cultural value, and the convergence of personal history with the visual language of mass media.
